UMass Student Farm
2018 marks the 12th season of the UMass Student Farming Enterprise program here at UMass. SFE began in the fall of 2007 with two students growing a quarter acre of kale and broccoli through an independent study.
The program started in 2007 as an independent study and was established as a year-long class in spring 2008. It was developed and taught by Ruth Hazzard and Amanda Brown.
The farm manages 14 acres with 10 acres in production each season, serves a 100+ member on-campus CSA, and supplies Earthfoods Cafe, UMass Dining Services, two Big Y Supermarkets, and UMass Student Farmers Market. They host 12-15 new Student Farmers each year.
Graduates have started their own farms, moved to managerial positions at regional farms, and established employment with organizations like Land For Good, Green City Grows, and The National Organic Farmers Association.
